Digging in West Georgia Ground
West Georgia’s red clay is dense, heavy and sticky when wet, and it holds water in the bottom of a trench or footing long after a storm passes. In places it gives way to layers of rock that slow digging and change the plan. Clay also shrinks and swells with moisture, so backfill that isn’t compacted in layers will settle and leave dips, cracks and soft spots.
Good excavation here means planning for those conditions: knowing where the spoil will go, keeping water out of the hole, and compacting backfill so the ground holds once the job is covered up.
Excavation Services We Provide
Foundation and Footing Excavation
Digging for footings, slabs, crawlspaces and for new homes, additions, shops and barns, cut to the dimensions and depth on your plans.
Utility Trenching
Trenches for water lines, sewer lines, electrical conduit and other underground utilities, dug to the depth required and backfilled properly once the lines are in.
Septic System Excavation
Excavation for tanks and drain fields as part of our licensed septic installation service.
Pond Digging and Pond Repair
New pond construction, pond expansions, and dam and spillway repair. Learn more about our pond and lake services.
Drainage and Culvert Installation
Digging for drainage pipe, culverts under driveways, and ditches that carry runoff away from homes and roads. See our grading and drainage services.
Site Development
Cut and fill, rough grading and site preparation for residential and commercial projects, often paired with land clearing so one crew handles the site from start to finish.
How an Excavation Project Works
- Review the plans and site. We look at what’s being built, check the ground, and confirm depths and dimensions.
- Locate utilities. We call Georgia 811 to have underground utilities marked before any digging starts.
- Clear and set up. Trees, brush and topsoil come off the work area, and we plan where spoil will be stockpiled or hauled.
- Excavate. We dig to grade with excavators and skid steers, checking depth and slope as we go.
- Backfill and compact. Once the work in the hole is done, we backfill in layers and compact so the ground doesn’t settle later.
- Final grade. We shape the surface around the work so water drains away from it.
A utility trench or small footing job can often be done in a day or two. Larger site work depends on the size of the project, soil and rock conditions, and weather.
What Affects the Cost of Excavation
- Volume of material to be dug, measured by size and depth.
- Soil and rock. Hitting rock slows the work and may require different equipment.
- Water. Wet ground or a high water table may need pumping or extra drainage.
- Spoil handling. Whether excess dirt stays on site or must be hauled off.
- Access for equipment on tight or sloped lots.
- Backfill and materials such as gravel, pipe or fill dirt.
- Clearing needed first, if the work area is wooded.
We quote after seeing the site and the plans, so you know the cost before the dig starts.

Have Any Questions?
Foundations and footings, utility trenches, septic systems, ponds, drainage and culverts, and site development for residential and commercial projects.
Yes. Underground utilities are marked through Georgia 811 before we dig on any job.
We’ll stop and talk with you about options before going further. Rock can change the time and equipment the job needs, so we tell you up front rather than surprising you on the invoice.
It can often be used elsewhere on the property for fill or grading. If not, we haul it off. We’ll settle that when we quote.
Yes. We handle land clearing, excavation and grading ourselves, so you don’t have to coordinate separate contractors.
It depends on how much material moves, soil and rock conditions, access and what happens with the spoil. Call us for a quote based on your project.
